Volunteer Opportunities
There are many opportunities to volunteer at A1AA, something to suit everyone’s interests and schedules.
Administrative/ Clerical Support (Humboldt)
Administrative volunteers assist with daily operations, specialized projects, and perform general office maintenance tasks. Support the receptionist; correspond with staff and clients via email, phone, and in person.
Advisory Council
The Council supports the A1AA mandate to develop and coordinate community-based services for older adults in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. For more information, contact Maren Rose at 707.442.3763 x208.
Advocate for Residents in Long-Term Care Facilities; Ombudsman Program
Advocate for dignity, quality of life, and quality of care for all residents in long-term care facilities by becoming a state-certified Ombudsman. Regularly visit your assigned facility, get to know the residents, and help them resolve their concerns.
Requirements for volunteers interested in this role:
- They complete certification training, document visits and casework, and participate in ongoing education.
- Requires a minimum time commitment of one year and approximately 12 hours per month after initial certification training.
Board of Directors (Humboldt & Del Norte)

Digital Literacy & Technology Instructor (Del Norte)
Teach older adults new skills for using technology, including phones, iPads, and other devices, via our Senior Planet program.
Fall Prevention Instructor; SAIL, BINGOCIZE, and Tai Chi
Become a trained exercise class instructor and teach classes to older adults that will improve their balance, flexibility, strength, and reduce the risk of falling.
HICAP Registered Medicare Counselor
Become a registered medicare counselor and help older adults understand and access their Medicare benefits.
Outreach & Tabling (Humboldt)
Represent A1AA at community events and provide materials and information to raise awareness of our services.
Volunteer Driver Program (Humboldt)
Provide rides to people 50 years or older who can’t drive anymore. Rides are provided to medical appointments, pharmacies, and grocery stores. Volunteers set their own schedule and sign up for rides online. Volunteers don’t have to wait on-site while clients are at appointments or grocery shopping. Mileage reimbursement provided.
Requirements for volunteers interested in this role:
- Must get a live scan with a clear criminal background check- A1AA provides reimbursement -and complete A1AA’s onboarding process.
- Must have a reliable vehicle, valid CA driver’s license, and a vehicle liability insurance policy of $100,000 per bodily injury and $300,000 per occurrence.
- Volunteer is given access to the scheduling database and can pick as many or as few rides as they’d like.
- We offer mileage reimbursement at $ 0.70 per mile.
