Welcome to the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program of Humboldt & Del Norte Counties!
Navigating the long-term care system can be overwhelming whether you’re a resident, a family member, or someone trying to find the right care for a loved one. That’s where we come in. Our mission is to protect and promote the rights, dignity, and quality of life of all residents in nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care facilities.
Our trained Ombudsman representatives provide confidential support at no cost to help address concerns about care, safety, and resident rights. We listen, investigate complaints, and work toward solutions that are resident driven. We also offer information, resources, and guidance to help families understand their options and make informed decisions. Additionally, we support facility staff through education and collaboration to improve care and resolve concerns constructively.
What We Do
Ombudsman staff and volunteers serve as trusted advocates for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Our work includes:
- Receiving, investigating, and working to resolve complaints or concerns about long-term care ranging from care quality to suspected abuse or neglect.
- Conducting regular, unannounced visits to Skilled Nursing Facilities and Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly.
- Witnessing Advance Health Care Directives for residents in Skilled Nursing Facilities.
- Attending care plan meetings and resident/family council meetings at the request of residents or their legal representatives.
- Promoting change through advocacy by engaging the public, stakeholders, and policymakers to improve long-term care services, laws, and regulations.
Why Our Work Matters
Over 60% of long-term care residents receive no regular visitors. For many, an Ombudsman may be the only person checking in on their care, listening to their concerns, and standing up for their rights.
According to the National Center for Victims of Crime, nearly 1 in 10 older adults in care facilities experience some form of abuse or neglect. Our presence helps prevent harm, promote accountability, and ensure that every resident is treated with dignity and respect.
