A1AA LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT, January 2024

Area 1 Agency on Aging serves people living throughout Humboldt and Del Norte counties on the Ancestral and Traditional homelands of the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, Yurok, Karuk, Hupa, Wiyot, and many rancherias including shared boundaries with the Sovereign Nation of Elk Valley, Resighini, Big Lagoon, Trinidad, Blue Lake, Table Bluff, and the Bear River Band of Rohnerville peoples. These people have lived here since time immemorial and live here still. We acknowledge and mourn the painful history of genocide and the devastation of lands and waters irreversibly altered.

We are grateful for opportunities to partner with these Tribes to create a shared vision that will rebalance our relationship to this place, and we hope  that through our work with elders and their families we can learn together and work towards a healthy future that honors elders and the land on which we all depend.

In recognition of this history, A1AA pays the Wiyot honor tax and educates our staff and volunteers about the history of the land and people who continue to live here and care for this land. We seek opportunities to be allies in any work that protects Ancestral and Traditional homelands and provides support to the elders of these communities.
